About River Cottage
River Cottage is a residential care home in Consett, County Durham, for adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. Most of the people who live here are younger adults. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. What sits behind that is not remarkable so much as steady: staff who stay long enough to know the people they support properly, time allowed to do things at the person's pace, and a willingness to say plainly when something needs putting right. We are a house rather than an institution, and being small is the point. People have their own rooms and their own belongings, a real say in what gets cooked and what happens at the weekend, and they decide who comes to visit. A home for younger adults has to be about building a life rather than winding one down. So we talk about work and college, money, cooking, travel, relationships and independence, and we expect people to take on more over time rather than less. For autistic residents especially, predictability does most of the work. Routines that hold, clear information, honest notice before anything changes and genuine choice prevent far more distress than any reaction afterwards. Respite stays are available. Please contact us to arrange a visit.
