About Penbownder House
Penbownder House is a residential care home in Launceston. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia or mental ill health. We plan around the person rather than the building. Before somebody moves in we ask how they have always run their day, what they want help with and what they would much rather do themselves, and we write it down so that it does not depend on who is on shift. Help with washing, dressing, mobility and medication is given discreetly and at the time that suits. For people living with dementia we keep the day familiar and unhurried, and we use what relatives tell us about the life behind the person rather than storing it away. Where mental ill health is part of the picture we work closely with community teams and involve the person properly in decisions about their own care. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather say so ourselves than leave you to discover it. We have accepted the findings, we are working through the areas raised, and we are happy to go through the detail with anyone who asks. Short respite stays are available. If you are considering us for a relative, please come and see the house and ask us whatever you need to.
