About Ridgeway Lodge Care Home

We are Ridgeway Lodge Care Home, a residential care home in Dunstable, Central Bedfordshire. We care for older people, residents living with dementia, people with a physical disability, and younger adults who need support with daily life. Being a residential home rather than a nursing home means our care centres on everyday living: help with washing and dressing, medication, meals, mobility and keeping a day going in a way that feels normal, with GPs and community nursing teams coming in when health care is required. We aim for a household rather than an institution. Residents bring their own furniture and pictures, get up when they wake rather than when a rota says so, and choose where and with whom they eat. For residents living with dementia we keep routines predictable and we take time to learn a person's history, because knowing what someone's life has been is usually what lets us understand what they are trying to tell us now. For those with a physical disability, the aim is help that is skilled, unhurried and arranged around what the person still wants to do independently. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good, and we carry on auditing our own practice between inspections. Relatives are welcome at any reasonable hour and we would always rather hear a concern early. If you are considering care in the Dunstable area, come and look round, talk to residents and families, and see what you make of us.

Dementia Care at Ridgeway Lodge Care Home

Luton and Dunstable Hospital is 1.2 miles from the home in a straight line. Dementia care is on the registration, and the home says it keeps routines predictable and takes time to learn a person's history. Knowing what somebody's life has been is usually what lets staff understand what they are trying to say now, by its account. That is the right instinct, and the question is how the knowledge reaches every shift. Ask how distress is handled and whether any part of the building is secured. Ask what happens as dementia advances and whether a move would be needed for nursing care.
