About Us

Care Is Central is a residential care home in Bedford, supporting older people and younger adults from Central Bedfordshire and the surrounding area, including people living with dementia and people with a physical disability.

Our view is that a care home should be somewhere you live rather than somewhere you have been placed, and the difference shows in small things. Whether you can still make your own tea. Whether anybody asks before coming into your room. Whether the food is worth looking forward to. Whether getting up at half past nine is treated as a preference or a problem.

The practical side has to be reliable for any of that to be possible, so we are careful about personal care, medication, meals and having staff awake and available at night. For people with a physical disability we make sure the equipment and the help are there to get out of a room and about the house, because mobility lost to inconvenience is the easiest loss to prevent and the hardest to reverse.

With dementia we work on familiarity. Consistent staff, an unhurried house, and enough of a person's history to find the thread when they are distressed. Families are our main source of that and we ask early.

We have not yet been given an overall rating by the Care Quality Commission. Please visit, unannounced if you prefer, and talk to residents and staff rather than to a brochure.

More about the care at Care Is Central - Honeysuckle House

What each type of care involves, and the questions worth asking when you call or visit.

Older Person Care

Whether getting up at half past nine is treated as a preference or a problem tells you most of what you need to know about a home. Care Is Central in Bedford is registered for older person care, with personal care, medication, meals and staff awake and available at night forming the reliable base. Ask whether anybody knocks before coming into a room, and whether a resident can still make their own tea. Ask for overnight staffing in plain numbers and the usual response time to a call bell. Ask how often the care plan is reviewed and who is invited. Fees in the East of England generally run £1000 to £1350 a week, while Central Bedfordshire pays around £750 to £900.

Dementia

Finding the thread when somebody is distressed takes enough knowledge of their life to try the right thing. Consistent staff, an unhurried house and a layout that can be walked without obstruction are what make that possible. Care Is Central is registered for dementia care, and families are the main source of the history that helps. Ask when that history is gathered and how it reaches the staff on shift. Ask how distress is handled and what happens when a resident is set on leaving. Ask where the home's limits lie as dementia advances, since no overall rating exists yet to speak for it.

Physical Disability

Mobility lost to inconvenience is the easiest loss to prevent and the hardest to reverse. Care Is Central is registered for physical disability, so ask what equipment is in place to get someone out of a room and about the house. Ask who assesses each person's preferred way of being helped and how quickly a change in mobility is acted on.

Younger Adults

Small things give away how a younger adult is really regarded: whether anybody asks before entering, whether the food is worth looking forward to. Care Is Central is registered for younger adults, so ask what last month held for somebody of working age. Ask who their peers would be and how trips out are arranged.

Residential Care

Somewhere you live rather than somewhere you have been placed is the distinction that matters, and residential registration sets the practical limits of it. Care Is Central provides daily living support: meals, personal care, help with medication and laundry, with no nurse on site. Health that needs clinical attention through the day and night belongs in a nursing home instead. Residential homes work with district nurses and GPs who visit, so ask how that is arranged locally. Ask what the home would do if a resident's needs rose beyond its registration, and whether a place is kept during a hospital admission. Compare the regional £1000 to £1350 a week with the council rate of £750 to £900 to see where a shortfall might fall.
