About Us
52 Mill Lane, part of Southdown Housing Association, is a residential care home in Portslade for adults with a learning disability and autistic adults.
We are a house on an ordinary street rather than an institution, and that shows in ordinary ways. People have their own rooms and their own belongings, a real say in what gets cooked and what happens at the weekend, and they decide who comes to visit. Because we are small, staff genuinely know the people they support, and that knowledge does more good than any amount of written assessment.
Support is agreed with each person and built around them. Some need help with personal care and health needs. Others mainly want somebody alongside them so that a demanding world becomes manageable, and support to do things for themselves rather than have them done. We expect people to take on more over time rather than settle into being looked after.
For autistic residents especially, predictability does most of the work. Routines that hold, clear information, honest notice before anything changes and genuine choice prevent far more distress than any reaction after the event.
Respite stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please contact us to arrange a visit.
