About Westminster House

Westminster House is a residential care home in Barking. Those living here include older people and adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults. We are home to younger adults as well as older ones, and we offer respite stays. A mixed household means we cannot run one routine and expect it to suit everybody, so we work out individually what a good day looks like for each person and build from there. For some it is company and something going on. For others it is their own room and being left in peace, and we treat that as an equally reasonable way to spend an afternoon. Where somebody can still do something themselves we support them to keep doing it, even when stepping in would be quicker. On a busy morning that takes discipline, and it is the difference between supporting a person and gradually deskilling them. Being in east London means buses, shops, colleges and places to meet people are within reach, and supporting somebody to use them on their own terms is usually worth more than anything we could arrange indoors. The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. If somebody living here is unhappy, we want to know why rather than manage the impression.
